Getting ready to make some major changes with the blueberries ..... I have 3 varieties and one variety in particular is not doing very well year to year even though they are almost 11 years old.
Update on the strawberry beds I set up (although I just realized I haven't even finished editing that video yet so its not even uploaded ... spoiler alert, some day I will get to how to plant bare root strawberries lol)
The weather has been crazy this year. I think the last time we had a spring this wet was when I was building the chicken coop in 2016 and a job I thought I would have done in 2-3 days ended up taking almost 2 months because it rained every day. Thats pretty much the way this year has been starting in march .... we have gotten so much rain, multiple days with over an inch. This weather has me so far behind ... so far that I totally missed my spring garden planting and if it doesn't stop raining I will miss summer too.
I'm also going back to raised beds (spoiler alert, another video not edited and uploaded yet). You see, I started this homestead back in 2015 with raised bed garden because my garden is on a hillside. Its what I was using instead of terraced rows to keep soil erosion to a minimum. Well, along came cancer in 2020 and in 2021 during all the memory loss from cancer, the garden beds had already rotted out so I tore them out and did traditional in-ground gardening. I totally forgot the reason I did raised beds was the soil erosion, until ... well, all my expensive soil started washing down the hillside in 2022, 2023, 2024 .... so fixing my mistake. I purchased 16 new galvanized raised beds because they were cheaper than doing 1x12's again with the "Still crazy lumber prices" but now that I have the galvanized beds ... I also understand why they were cheaper aka made in china sold via amazon.
So lets end on a bright note even though it seems everything is gloomy .... rhubarb is popping this year with all this rain. Like wow! I have already made rhubarb strawberry jam, rhubarb cobbler, rhubarb lemon bread, and rhubarb butter .... and with all the rain and overnight tempts being relatively low, I will have even more to harvest in a few more days.
A few people asked, I bought the arbor, side trellises, and gate from amazon in spring 2018 and have been uber happy with them (Yardistry). The arbor/trellises are made out of a pvc type of material and are not as lightweight as they appear, the arbor weighs about 50 lbs by itself and the gate is made out of cedar that comes pre-stained and sealed - I've never even so much as painted any of them, how they appear in video is how they were shipped to me. They are actually cheaper today than when I originally bought them. I would buy them again if I ever needed to but I think they will outlast me. This is the links to them.
