Many years ago the drs wanted to put me on statins and blood pressure medication because I was borderline at the age where heart disease would start causing medical issues and since both sides of my family had a history of heart disease, The drs wanted to start me early on treatment aka lets ride the cash register and get this patient on the medications early so we have a repeat patient in our office. So I got the prescriptions written for both blood pressure medication and statins with a follow-up appointment in 3 months to check bloodwork to see if the drs saw the results they were after. Well, I also have this thing about finding alternative options. My aunt who has been a nurse for over 30 years said whatever you do, don't take statins and she said there were alternatives but didn't specify what they were. At the time I was pretty big into weightlifting so I didn't want to take statins either. I never took either prescription, still have them for some reason in the medicine cabinet "just in case" I guess. But I did some research and found this youtube video where a licensed medical dr who was using what is now known as a holistic approach to medicine suggested a treatment of taking "garlic tablets" with a specific ramp-up period and then a maintenance period (I will go over in a bit). At the time, his video was the ONLY video I could find that stated this. But I figured I would at least try it. He also stated, even if you ate 10 cloves of garlic daily, it would not equal the amount of active garlic ingredients that were contained in a garlic tablet and that's why you have to do the tablet. So I head to walmart and get 1,000mg garlic tablets by spring valley. I started the 30 day ramp up period of taking 2 per day at the same time the first 30 days, then reduce it to 1 daily if symptoms improved. So since I was just borderline showing signs of heart disease aka hardening of the arteries meaning my blood pressure was just very slightly elevated near the top of what is considered normal range, my resting heart rate was just slightly elevated also near the top of what is considered normal range, and my cholesterol levels in the bloodwork was just slightly elevated into the upper range of still normal but concerning, I did the ramp-up for 30 days and switched to the once daily. I started this about 2-1/2 months prior to my follow-up bloodwork to check progress. At my follow-up bloodwork appointment, the results were "never seen such improvements in this short period of time" from the nurse and the dr said "I've never seen anyone improve that quickly to the point that I wouldn't even want you taking these prescriptions if this was your initial bloodwork results". Then there were talks about eating healthy, exercising, and things I should do and things I should avoid (which to be honest was basically what I had already been doing anyways before even seeing the dr for a reason not even related to heart problems .... and the bloodword was just included as part of my new patient examination). So the dr advised for me to stop taking the two prescriptions and scheduled another appointment for 90 days out to see if my cholesterol levels remained the same or were elevated. (I never told this dr ever that I was taking garlic tablets) And in 90 days of me continuing to take a daily garlic tablet, the cholesterol levels went down even further, along with resting heart rate and blood pressure. I have always been a fitness junky and for the last 5+ years (starting late 2019) battling cancer and cancer recovery, I hear nurses and drs all say things like "I wish my blood pressure was this great" or "wow, you have a very low resting heart rate ... we should probably look into this" and I always reply with "I work out A LOT" and that always explains that away. And the best part, I know the nurses hate me if I get admitted into the hospital because my heart rate monitor "low heart rate" warning goes off non-stop because they are set to 40 beats per minute and mine is often low 30's if I am just relaxing (sleeping can be high 20's). So what is my resting heart rate? Its low 30's usually around 32/33 beats per minute, my last blood pressure was 111/64 (which is considered in the normal range for someone in their early 30's), my cholesterol levels are pretty much in the middle of the ok range and I eat 4-12 eggs minimum every day for the last 10 - 11 years (sometimes even more than that by the time you add eggs I cook with, make ice cream with, etc). Oh yea, after that 3rd set of bloodwork, I never saw that dr or any other drs until I got cancer.....because I don't get sick, ever ... not colds, not flu, not covid, nothing. I am a go big or go home kinda guy .... get cancer, kick its butt, continue on.
I'm telling you this so you know if you have coronary heart disease or high blood pressure, you should talk to your dr and see if they are ok with you trying this garlic tablet routine as a test trial.
