How many people know you can eat asparagus raw? Many times when I am out in the garden, I see asparagus that is almost ready to harvest and then I decide to wait a day or two and for whatever reason I don't get to it ... lately its been because of all the rain or because I am at work. Asparagus that is starting to get woody always starts at the bottom of the stalk and works itself up to the tip. That means, asparagus you might not harvest for cooking, is still good to eat fresh.
Also I go over a trick to keep asparagus you are letting go to fern, or asparagus too far gone to eat fresh or cook, from falling over. Its a simple support system that will keep it upright so it doesn't get top heavy, fall over and shade other nearby beds or vegetables and also attempts to keep the seeds from spreading to other areas. Its a simple and cheap solution that only requires 4 posts and some poly twine. Poly twine will last a couple of years but will need replaced eventually.
I'm using 7 foot heavy steel t posts made for installing farm fence that you can get at your local ag supply stores or rural king or tractor supply for the best price but because they are so heavy, I can't find a listing on amazon (amazon does have 7 foot alloy steel but I suspect those are considered light weight or medium weight) .....
