Before Rosa Parks’ historic stand, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin made a bold and courageous move that many have never heard about. On March 2, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus. She was arrested, jailed, and ostracized—yet her bravery helped lay the foundation for the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the larger Civil Rights Movement.

So why isn’t Claudette Colvin’s name as widely known? At the time, civil rights leaders strategically chose Rosa Parks as the face of the movement, believing that her age and image as a respectable, middle-class woman would garner more public support. But Colvin’s refusal to move was no less powerful, no less historic. In fact, she later became one of the key plaintiffs in Browder v. Gayle, the Supreme Court case that ultimately struck down bus segregation laws.

Colvin’s story is a powerful reminder that Black women—especially young Black women—have always been at the forefront of change. Her courage at just 15 years old speaks to the resilience, strength, and defiance that have shaped our history and continue to inspire us today.

This Black History Month, let’s give Claudette Colvin her flowers. Her name deserves to be remembered. Her story deserves to be told. And her legacy should remind us that no act of resistance is too small to make a difference. ✊🏾
