Today, we honor a woman whose name may not be as widely known as it should be, but whose impact is undeniable—Dr. Anna Julia Cooper.
Born into enslavement in 1858, Anna Julia Cooper defied every limitation placed upon her. She became one of the first Black women to earn a Ph.D., a fierce advocate for Black education, and a bold voice for Black women’s empowerment at a time when both racism and sexism sought to silence us. She once declared:
‘Only the BLACK WOMAN can say when and where I enter… without violence and without suing or special patronage, then and there the whole Negro race enters with me.’
Let that sink in. She knew that when Black women rise, entire generations rise with us. And yet, how often are we expected to carry the weight of our families, communities, and workplaces—often without support, without recognition, and at great cost to ourselves?
Anna Julia Cooper’s legacy is a call to action for us today. She reminds us that education is power, that our voices are necessary, and that we must refuse to shrink in the face of those who try to erase or diminish our contributions. She teaches us that self-advocacy is not selfish—it’s revolutionary.
So, sis, as we navigate these uncertain times—politically, socially, and in our own careers—how are you making space for yourself? How are you reclaiming your time, your peace, and your purpose?
