I recently watched Bloomberg's Television "Businessweek Convenes: Black Leaders Face the DEI Backlash"* featuring Ursula Burns, Nicole Reboe, Jacob Walthour Jr., Lisa Wardell, and Chris Williams.
And I had to stop and respond.
Not just as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years of experience.
Not just as a toxic job survivor.
But as a Black Woman who was put in a position after George Floyd's murder to lead DEI efforts at a job that was never truly committed to doing the real work that DEI requires.
Because as I watched this conversation — I kept coming back to one thing.
You cannot pour concrete over a broken foundation and call it progress.
And that is exactly what corporate America did with DEI.
And exactly what many of us were asked to lead.
In this reaction video, I am sharing 7 things this roundtable made me think about — not specifically about what was said — but about what watching it brought up for me from my own experiences navigating toxic jobs and the broken systems that were supposed to protect us inside them.
This video is for the Black Woman who:
Was handed a DEI title after George Floyd's murder without the power, the resources, or the institutional will to make it real;
Is watching her gains disappear in real time and wondering what comes next;
Is still inside a toxic job trying to figure out when and how to make her move;
Has been pushed out and is trying to figure out what to build on the other side
