Before there was Amelia Earhart, there was Bessie Coleman—the first Black Woman and Native American to earn a pilot’s license. At a time when racism and sexism shut every door in her face, she refused to accept limits. When no American flight schools would admit her because she was Black and a woman, she packed her bags and learned to fly in France. And when she returned, she didn’t just soar through the skies—she shattered every expectation placed on her.
Bessie Coleman’s story is more than history—it’s a lesson in boldness, resilience, and refusing to take "no" for an answer. Her determination paved the way for generations of Black women to take up space in fields where we were told we didn’t belong. But even today, we see the same barriers disguised in different ways: workplaces that shut us out, opportunities that seem just out of reach, and systems that still try to keep us grounded.
