Well, do we need to work a gauge swatch if you are using Portuguese Style?
Answer: only if you want your project to fit the person who is going to wear it when you are finished knitting it. Maybe that’s why shawls and scarves are so popular, as pretty much you don’t need to follow gauge. For all garments though, you are going to work at least 80,000 stitches, send hours working, spend money on yarn, needles, buttons, gadgets, etc to just put the project away when it is complete (if you complete it) because it does not fit right. Guess how do I know that? So a couple of years ago, I bought a membership for Amy Herzog Designs and start following her method. THat’s where I learned to measure a gauge swatch and I believe it is the best method. Since then, it is the only way I do it and I want to share it with you.
