James Kalm has been observing the developments of Ben Pritchard’s work for nearly a decade, and is always pleased to bring viewers the latest updates. This intimate show of paintings, executed in Ben’s Bushwick backyard, during the Covid-19 pandemic, features painterly compositions, in both oil paint (some built up over years), and watercolor. Using a reduced pallet, Pritchard designs these pictures like ritual diagrams, or ceremonial maps with a sophisticated underlaying formalism, and coloristic complexity. In brief spontaneous interviews, the artist also discusses the circumstances of the execution, his take on Williamsburg’s place in art history, as well as technical approaches to his media.
