James Kalm slinks into the East Village to wallow in the poignant nostalgia of a bygone era. “Tabboo Early Works” presents viewers with a graphic guide to much of the happenings and activism that established the East Village as the cultural focal point of New York’s 1980s. Arriving in 1982, Tabboo, tapped into the zeitgeist of a scene that’s exuberance and creativity would only be dialectally opposed by the tragedy that ensued. Publishing posters for the Pyramid Club, creating back drops for Wig Stock, and painting portraits of local legends, Tabboo (Gordon Robichaux or Stephen Tashjian, b. 1959, Worcester, Massachusetts) captured a fleeting scene with a Punk Rocco sense of style, and a unique text design that’s endured.
