James Kalm can’t always find the time to get in and visit all the important art exhibitions he’d like to cover, and the Covid-19 pandemic has only exacerbated this challenge. Though planning for weeks to stop in to view Harriet Korman’s “Notes on Painting 1969-2019” at Thomas Erben Gallery, when checking the listings, your correspondent was disappointed to find out that the show closed last Saturday. However, with a brief phone call, Kalm was informed that the show hadn’t been de-installed yet. Zipping in on his trusty bike, Thomas was gracious enough to move paintings, ladders and turn on all the gallery lights for a better video panorama. Viewers will get a private stroll through of this indexical, mini-retrospective. Within the parameters of this exhibition, Korman displays a diverse set of works, witnessing her continuing exploration of the idea of “abstract” painting over the last fifty years. Every artist reflects the concerns and challenges of their time, and these paintings map the arch, not only of Harriet Korman, but what many of the practitioners of painting here in New York were dealing with at the time.
