James Klam has been watching the work and career of Enzo Cucchi since the early 1980s. As a major member of the Italian Trans-Avantgarde cadre called “The Three Cs” (composed of himself, Sandro Chia, and Francisco Clemente), Cucchi achieved worldwide recognition. With “Mostra Coagula” the artist presents his first exhibition with the Vito Schnabel Gallery, and his first return to New York in twenty years. This show is composed of a series of intimately scaled mixed media paintings. Many have additional sculptural elements which contain examples of Cucchi’s ceramic work. While the artist continues to develop a gamut of symbolic images, he also presents works that are purely abstract and riff on art historical art movements like Abstraction-Création, Arte Povera, and pittura metafisica.
