Keysight, NTT Innovative Devices, and Lumentum achieved a significant industry milestone by demonstrating 448 Gbps optical transmission using 224 GBaud PAM4, paving the way for 3.2T Ethernet in next-generation AI data centers.

As AI workloads surge, networks must evolve to keep pace with this growth. While alternatives like PAM6 and PAM8 introduce complexity, this breakthrough proves that standard PAM4 can scale to 448 Gbps per lane — doubling the symbol rate without compromising reliability.

The achievement required intense global collaboration, custom software, and advanced signal generation and measurements. The setup included Keysight’s arbitrary waveform generator (AWG), Lumentum’s externally modulated lasers, and NTT’s high-speed interleaver

More than just a demo, it validates that the technology and materials are ready for the future — with clear potential to scale to 448 Gbps and beyond, enabling ultra-fast, energy-efficient optical interconnects for tomorrow’s AI infrastructure.
