PAL 50Hz

The famous duo (Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima) try their musical craft in the 8-bit genre of Sega games and Batman Returns (SMS-GG) is a prime example of how great their musical craft can really be! Heck! aside from ''The Revenge Of Shinobi'' on the Mega Drive/Genesis, I honestly prefer Yuzo Koshiro's work on the 8-bit systems more than his 16-bit stuff, the Streets Of Rage osts on the Mega Drive/Genesis has never really got me excited like the 8-bit stuff like ''Sonic 1, GG Shinobi and Batman Returns''. When it comes to the Mega Drive's FM YM2612 I prefer it when music programmers try to make it sound like rock, pop or disco music, simulating real instruments rather than trying to create retail electronic music of the early 1990's which is what the Streets Of Rage soundtracks do. The PSG 8-bit stuff seems to rely even more on having polished melodies with extremely well written arrangements done to them which I like very much, we can hear alot of these great arrangements in this soundtrack of Batman Returns. Some tracks really come out sounding great such as track 8 and 9.

Now 80% of this soundtrack was captured from an original PAL SEGA Master System model 1 but 2 of the 3 boss tracks had to be recorded from the Regen emulator from the Game gear version on account of the Master System version not having a menu pause option with the music still playing. In the Master System version you would normally hear that fat bastard blowing fire at you and Catwoman's cart wheels and whip interrupting the music, recording it from the Game Gear version eliminates these sound effects over the music.

Tracks 1,2,3,5,7,8,9,10 and 11 were all captured from a real Sega Master System.

Tracks 4, 6 and 12 were recorded from Regen.

(It gets even more complicated)

Tracks 13 and 14 were recorded from Kega Fusion.

Forcing the Game Gear ROM in Japan NTSC allows you to bring up a hidden sound test by holding down the start button which is where tracks 13 and 14 came from, Regen doesn't allow you to switch the country setting while the game is turned on, you have to hard reset in order to change the frequency of the game ie- 50Hz/60Hz etc. Because the Game Gear version only allows this sound test in Japan NTSC, you're forced to use Kega Fusion and then switch in-game the country frequency back to Europe PAL, so that is why Fusion is used, it sounds like complete dog poo with it's extremely softened noise channel but these tracks were only added as bonus tracks and because of that, it doesn't matter too much, but if I had my way I would always stick to Regen emulator when an original Master System can't be used or captured.

This is the PAL soundtrack of the game heard in Europe and several other parts of the world, no doubt there will be a few dickheads over time posting the ''speed it up to 1.25'' which makes no sense to me, i'm archiving the PAL Master System version not the 60Hz Game Gear version and on top of that this game never saw a North American release on the Master System so please keep your comments respectful, the intended speed thing has no real basis for an argument against how it actually was back in the day, it's 50Hz and it's not changing, how it may be intended to be cannot change how it actually was and the 3rd and 4th generations of video games showcase this.
