Let's take a look through DC Comics' Elseworlds imprints, and see where and when the imprint has decided to place these legendary heroes! And if they work in their new environments.

Batman Master of the Future is the sequel to Gotham by Gaslight, and the only continuation in the original Elseworlds imprint. Bruce and his friend Teddy discuss how life never turns out how you expect, while they watch a bare-knuckle boxing match. When the fighter he bet on goes down, Teddy angrily shouts the fight was rigged, and is dared by the crowd to face the victor himself. Bruce volunteers to go in instead, and easily defeats the brawler off-panel. They decide to donate their winnings to a fund operated by Bruce's fiancee Julie Madison, who is telling her friend about the time she was saved from a group of muggers by Batman, concluding by saying the ever changing world needs someone like the masked figure. However, Bruce confides to Alfred that he feels his heroics are unneeded since stopping Jack the Ripper and decides to retire Batman so he can continue his life as an important member of society. The next day, the newly elected Mayor Tolliver meets with Gotham's upper class to discuss the importance of the upcoming fair, which, as he claims, will bring the city into the future. Even denying Buffalo Bill and his popular western show just to prove his point. Just then, a uniformed figure appears in the council window, introducing himself as Alexandre LeRoi and decrying what they interpret as progress, demanding he be made master of the city or suffer the consequences. An offended Tolliver orders his arrest and LeRoi jumps from the ninth floor and vanishes without a trace, while the gathering decide to ignore his threats. Except for Bruce, who discusses the situation with Julie later at dinner, Julie reiterating that she believes champions like Batman are needed to combat this new breed of villain. Meanwhile, LaRoi discusses with a hidden figure that his warnings have been ignored, thus he begins his plan to level civilization and guide what's left in his utopian vision. A month later, Tolliver shows Bruce the fair's construction, when a clown-headed machine suddenly appears, revealing itself to be an automatic gatling gun that attacks the crowd around it. Thinking quickly, Bruce gets Tolliver to safety and throws a metal pole at it, smashing it. Tolliver refuses to take the hint and continues construction, while Commissioner Gordon also admits that they need Batman for this mission, finally convincing Bruce to resurrect Batman as a hero of the people. On the day of the fair, Tolliver is kidnapped from his own home by LaRoi, who brings him to his airship, saying he'll finally teach him and the city what happens when he's ignored. He approaches the fairgrounds and uses a solar powered laser to open fire on the pavilion, announcing he'll do the same to the rest of the city, before pushing Tolliver out of the ship where he falls to his death. As the city burns, Julie tries to save a young girl, only to be trapped inside a burning building. When they're saved by the surprise reappearance of Batman. Batman then grabs a glider from the showcase, and, using the hot air caused by the fires, manages to float up to LaRoi's airship, confronting the villain and destroying his robotic pilot Antonio, which LaRoi's damaged mind saw as his only friend. They duel throughout the ship, LaRoi managing to get a lucky hit, but Bruce proves too agile to strike again. As they fight, the damaged gas valves begin to increase in pressure, LaRoi completely ignoring Batman's warnings. Thus Batman is the only one who gets away as the airship explodes. Batman also tracks down LaRoi's hidden accomplice Claypool, who admits he wanted his ghetto property destroyed so he could collect the insurance. And later, Bruce and Julie meet on a cliffside overlooking Gotham, where Julie reveals she knows Bruce is Batman, saying she'll forever support him as the hero that Gotham needs. Yeah, I don't like this one as much. It's not terrible, and the artwork is beautiful, giving a massive scope to everything, but I found a lot of it boring. Bruce barely even has a part in his own story, much less Batman, and most of the dialog is just people reiterating that maybe Batman should show up and do something again. And LaRoi, whom I'm guessing is this universe's counterpart to Ra's Al Ghul, is just your typical narcissistic egomaniac, whose goal is completely unknown. Though I guess that's a realistic trait for these types of people. Also Julie has no reason to be in this, period. Overall, it's not a bad comic, it's just generic and doesn't build much on this world or this Batman. And if you're wondering if I'll be featuring the other stories that take place in this universe, I plan to. But not in this particular lookthrough.
