I start off by hauling some gravel to fill back in around the footings. Then I head up to the shop to fabricate the metal brackets that I weld onto the metal posts, which support the wooden beam. Now that the wooden beam is supported by the metal posts, I can remove the temporary wall and fill in the area underneath the overhang with gravel. Then it's back up to the shop to fabricate the metal beams that will form the main structure of the deck, complete with hangers for the wooden joists. And lastly, I stain the cedar decking I recently hauled home from town.
