So Bad Batch Episode 9 Season 2 is finally here and we need to break it down, so let’s get straight into it. We begin the episode looking over a dusty backwater planet and the unique soundtrack of this episode definitely gives off an old western feel. Like many of the old spaghetti westerns that inspired the original trilogy, the inspiration here is also unmistakable. The marauder lands on the dusty planet and we learn that the team are here to excavate a mine that Cid recently purchased. Specifically looking for a mineral by the name of Ipsium, a highly combustible mineral but incredibly valuable once it is refined. As the team prepares to enter the mine, hunter notices a storm in the distance but deduces that it's not headed in their direction. Hunter initially puts Omega and Wrecker on look out as tech and him head into the mine, but tech raises up a valid point that they need Wrecker inside to carry the mineral. And this whole scene besides creating a small conundrum for the team, really serves as a reminder that the team is a man short because Echo is gone. A change that not only slows down the team on their mission but presents itself as a bit of a sore point for Omega.
Omega offers to be on the lookout on her own, but Hunter disagrees as Cid has warned them that there are poachers in the area. Sticking to the original plan, the two head inside while from a distance a supposed poacher spies on them and their ship. Tech and hunter find a small deposit but due to the awkward location of the mineral, they will need Omega’s help. As Tech scans the mineral, we can see some aurebesh that translates to ipsium detected.
Omega heads into the mine to help extract the mineral but in the meantime the poacher makes their way into the Marauder. And immediately the bad batch’s mistake becomes clear. By landing the ship far out of sight, the ship becomes easy pickings for the poacher. An issue that would not have occurred if Echo was still around. With 5 men, the team could have easily left one of the members behind to guard the ship. Not to mention, it becomes pretty evident that Echo’s intelligence, common sense, observation skills, and all around level headedness is severely missed. And was definitely much needed in this situation. As the rest of the bad batch emerge from the mine, Wrecker remarks that the storm is approaching, and the hunter realizes that someone has stolen their ship.
And so now with their ship gone, we start to see some arguing between wrecker and tech. The team then decide to head towards the closest settlement but as they travel they almost get runned over by a stampeding herd of blue deer. And the entire sequence is somewhat eerily reminiscent of another disney project, lion king, with Mufasa getting runned over by a stampede as well. The team survives the encounter but tech chastises Wrecker for dropping the mineral and Wrecker challenges him to carry it. The storm catches up to the team and they are all forced to hide in a nearby mine, but not before the storm triggers the Ipsium causing a cave in at the entrance of the mine. Tech and Wrecker start arguing again, and Omega asks how they are going to find their ship. Hunter tells her that it is not important right now and tech adds that it's pretty unlikely that it will be recovered. This really upsets Omega who considers it a home and confuses Tech who says they can just get another ship. But really what this entire conversation is about is really Omega’s struggle to accept these massive changes happening around her. Unlike the other members, Omega is still a child, and to some extent Echo leaving the squad must have felt like she was losing a brother. And on top of that losing the Marauder which she considers a home must have made things even more difficult. Tech points out that he doesn’t understand why Omega is making a big deal out of it given that the bad batch existed before Echo and will continue to exist after. But if you zoom out and look at the bigger picture, Omega is not the only member who is struggling with this change. Whether knowingly or unknowingly, the entire mission so far has been made difficult by the fact that Echo isn’t around. From the very beginning with the team landing on the planet, all of their issues have stemmed from the fact that they don’t have enough manpower...
