Andor episode 9 just dropped so let’s get straight into the breakdown.
We begin with Bix’s interrogation at the hands of Dedra, and this whole scene is the stuff of nightmares. Bix is initially resistant to Dedra’s question, and we are then introduced to Doctor Gorst who has a rather special way of torturing people. Specifically using the dying screams of the natives on Dizon Fray, another new planet introduced by the show. The doctor then goes on to explain the unique properties of the screams and especially the potency of dying children. All of which is actually inspired by real life torture methods of using loud music or white noise. Really just gives off the creeps and unlike previous scenes of torture in Star Wars, this one delves much deeper into the psychological harm the Empire can inflict on others.
And to hold the audience in suspense there is a brief moment of silence before the screaming begins. As the door closes we get this shot, which is a one for one recreation of princess leia’s torture scene (scene).
On Narkina 5, we can see that Cassian has quickly assumed a bit of a leadership role within the team, and he has spent his time in prison quietly assessing the situation. But as we see Ulaf is beginning to struggle with the intensity of the work with his old age. Cassian heads off for a toilet break, and tries to cut through a metal pipe before being interrupted. Not entirely sure what he is trying to achieve here, but it does give us a hint to the forming escaping plan. We also learn that a few other prisoners are in it as well, and this prisoner here goes by the name of Birnok. And we begin to see the formings of their escape plan, taking note that the upper deck and the lift doesn’t have the capability to fry.
Back on Ferrix, Bix ends up spilling the beans and the ISB gets one step closer to finding Andor. The ISB decide to keep Bix alive as the only person capable of identifying Luthen, and decide to hang Salman Paak, the man previously in charge of the radio station. The decision to hang Salman Paak will probably lead to the riots we were briefly shown in the trailer, especially as resentment against the empire builds.
Mon Mothma gives a speech to the senate, and we see lights flicker off as Senators lose interest in her speech, just a demonstration of the increasing power Palpatine has over the senate. And we get the sense of the increasing redundancy of the senate, a redundancy that will later escalate to the point where the Emperor dismisses the senate entirely following the completion of the death star. Mon Mothma’s driver informs her that her cousin has arrived, who we later learn is Vel. And this might be another crucial misstep as we do know that the driver is an ISB plant. So news of this could get back to the ISB who might later reconnect the dots and trace the rebellion back to Mon Mothma.
Back on Narkina 5, we get rumors of what might be happening on level two, and a sudden power outage. Now as we learn later that everyone on level 2 was fried to death and that could be the reason for the power outage shown here. The amount of electricity and power required to kill everyone on level 2, likely forced the imperials to reroute the power from one level to another, causing the brief blackout.
Mothma meets Vel, who has brought a gift for her daughter from Tassio Moon, again another new place introduced to star wars. Mothma tries to go in for an embrace with Vel, but she only repeats the same line that Cinta gave her in the previous episode. Mothma tries to sus out what Vel is doing for Luthen, but Vel doesn’t give anything away and she reminds mothma of her vow.
Now in canon not much is known about this vow, but in legends a similar situation did occur in the force unleash in which rebel leaders gathered on Kashyyyk and took a vow symbolizing the birth of the rebellion.
Cassian tries to convince Kino to give him some information, but Kino refuses, still believing that if he serves out his sentence, he will be able to get out of there. And Cassian keeps on asking… which really is the final piece of information he needs to put together an escape plan...
