Fall is here, and with that beautiful fall foliage has returned! In October of 2020, I made a visit to the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, located along the New Mexico/Colorado state line. Traversing some of the most rugged mountain railroad terrain in North America, the Cumbres and Toltec has always been on the bucket list for seeing in person. Being the first week of October, and with the presence of fall colors in their peak, it was a perfect opportunity to see this historic steam railroad in action. Definitely one of the most memorable chases I've ever done!
CTS 488, a 1925 built K-36 Mikado class locomotive, was in charge of this day's passenger excursion run. With Cumbres being one of the few steam operators still using coal, the 488 was working hard pulling the train up the 10,000 ft elevation Cumbres Pass.
In this video, you'll see footage as we follow the train from Chama, New Mexico, to Cumbres Pass, Colorado in the San Juan mountain range.
