While Montana is known for the Montana Rail Link as a majority, the BNSF also has a large presence in this region. BNSF has their very own Northern Transcon line in the far Northern regions of Montana, but also uses the Montana Rail Link lines as a thruway. This provides some extra train action opportunities along the MRL, which mostly sees the BNSF trains. BNSF trains along this section of the line are run by MRL crews, as no BNSF crews are qualified on these sections of track.
Most of the BNSF trains in this section are manifest trains and coal trains, however a variety of others can be seen as well. One of noteworthy importance, is the BNSF "J" Train, which carries Boeing 737 fuselages from Wichita, KS to Renton, WA. I managed to get one of these trains making its way through Western Montana, always a fun sight to see!
In this video, you'll see various BNSF run thru freight trains as they make their way through Western Montana on the MRL 4th, 10th, and 3rd Subdivisions. All locations and lines described in the video.
