The Kookaburra is one of Australia's most recognised icons, from it's unique look , to the unmistakable "laugh". These large Kingfishers , while home in the bush, have adapted well into the suburbs, and get on well with people.
Their call can be heard in many locations, but they do a good job of hiding in the trees, so it's always special to see one close up.
So it was a surprise to hear some knocking on my widows, just a few weeks before Christmas 2024, and to find a pair of young adult Kooka's wanting my attention. After a few days of watching me eat lunch, and not interested in any scraps I offered, I did some research , and concluded that they were after a nest box , so I built them one.
It's been a few weeks and I'm pretty sure there are chicks in the box, as the parents keep arriving with small lizards, so stay tuned for the next chapter.
