An initial test resulted in constant sound when a drum gate was plugged into the controller. The Drum gates output at 12v I believe so I tested using a 10k potentiometer in conjunction with the original sensitivity knobs to see if I could calibrate the drum controller just to see if this would work as a proof of concept. I also lowered the gate length on the Beat Step Pro thinking that the gate length and high voltage were impacting the controller.

The result was somewhat promising. When a sequence is played - in this instance just a hit on all 4 beats - it sounds as if it is going with the rhythm. More testing is required but this brings the idea of an Atari drum machine closer to reality, whether with a controller, or with the Beat Step Pro works, an external sequencer or even MIDI control.
