The countdown to the Arizona State University football season is on, and one professor is focusing on the homecoming game by building a project months in the making. Tim Gomez, an ASU professor of public administration, is constructing a 6-foot-tall Sparky the Sun Devil statue using 30,000 Lego pieces. Gomez previously started Timmy's Brick Lab selling smaller Lego Sparky kits, but he is now going life-size inside his garage using a welded metal frame to support the build.
The internal structure prevents the heavy Lego bricks from crushing the base. Gomez explained, "If I were to build this without a frame or internal structure, the ankles would snap. All that weight would compress on the lowest parts." With weeks to spare before homecoming, he is completing the legs and structural hips using Technic beams while working through the Arizona summer heat in his garage.
The completed build will feature bright light orange and dark red pieces to represent ASU maroon and gold colors. Once unveiled at homecoming, the statue will find a permanent home on Mill Avenue at the new Rally House. Gomez, who ordered close to 15,000–20,000 pieces over a two-week span for the project, said, "Maybe there's a Lego professor job one day, and I'll apply for it!"
