In the dense mangroves of Papua, the Asmat people still live by their ancestral laws.
Once feared headhunters, they have turned those same rituals into ceremonies celebrating life.
When Rufinus, a young Asmat, hunts a cassowary, every gesture follows sacred rules — none of the animal is wasted.
The bird’s thighbone, once a human trophy, is now carved into a knife: a symbol of courage, adulthood, and continuity.
Guided by his elders, Rufinus learns to shape the blade, weave its sheath, and decorate it with cassowary feathers, believed to “cut the wind” like the great bird itself.
This ceremony — half craft, half spiritual rite — reminds the Asmat of their origins and of the ancestors who shaped their world.
Even without headhunting, the Asmat preserve their identity through sculpture, ritual, and memory — living proof that tradition can evolve without disappearing.
