Arthur Lourié (1892-1966) was a Russian composer. Often considered the first Russian Futurist in music, Lourié befriended a number of Futurist poets including Anna Akhmatova, Nikolai Mayakovsky and Alexander Blok and was a signer of the St. Petersburg Futurist Manifesto. His early works were significantly influenced by Scriabin but also anticipated developments in later music of the 20th century, including dodecaphony and graphic notation.

After leaving Russia in 1921, Lourié befriended Igor Stravinsky, whose work he not only championed but also influenced. During this time, his work turned to a more Neoclassical idiom, and hints of his music can be found in Stravinsky's subsequent works; for instance Lourié's titanic "Concerto spirituale" for chorus, piano and orchestra of 1929 foreshadowed Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms written the following year.

After a falling out with Stravinsky in the 1930s (which undoubtedly contributed to his lack of fame today) and the 1940 German invasion of Paris, Lourié fled to the USA and settled in New York City; during his time in the US, he wrote several film scores but received almost no performances of his concert music. Lourié passed away in Princeton, New Jersey in 1966.
