The EU has agreed to sanction three Israeli settlers and four settler organisations for violence towards Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas said ‘violence and extremism carry consequences.’
The bloc is also investing nearly $7 million dollars to document attacks.
Settlement expansion has accelerated significantly since Benjamin Netanyahu returned to power at the head of a pro-settler right-wing government. According to UN figures, around 12,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced by settlers since late 2023.
Debate now continues over how effective the sanctions will be. Several EU countries have been calling for tougher measures, including suspension of European Union trade pact with Israel.
The EU remains Israel’s largest trading partner, but divisions within the bloc have so far prevented agreement on stronger economic sanctions or the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.
So are these sanctions sufficient, or should the EU go further?
