April 22: Dexter Patterson – Building a Culture of Conservation

Dexter Patterson, known online as the Wisco Birder, gave a spirited and entertaining talk about building community and experiencing joy facilitated in the activity of birding. That is, getting outside to witness and enjoy birds in all their sounds, beauty, and movement. He explained that it isn’t about the birds – it’s about building community. As a co-founder of the BIPOC Birding Club of Wisconsin and author of Birds of the Great Lakes, he encourages anyone who shares the values of equity, diversity, inclusion, and access to join. Programs to bring people closer to experiencing “Bird Joy” include a commitment to accessibility, creation of birding backpacks for adults and children to share in the birding experience, and the Bus to Nature program to eliminate transportation as a barrier to enjoying nature.
