Do Santa’s elves knit?
And are they good at it
Because I want a sweater for Christmas
And I wanna be sure it fits

I know I could buy a sweater
At the store down the road
But I don’t want to contribute to a sweatshop
Where the workers face overload

And I don’t believe in fast fashion
Where clothes are sold at a cheap price
Because what they’re doing to the environment
Isn’t very nice
(Not so nice)

So knit it slow and knit it fair,
With careful hands and honest care,
If every stitch is done with grace,
I’ll feel the care in how it’s made.
No hidden cost, no silent pain,
No corners cut for someone’s gain,
If Santa’s elves are making it,
That’s the sweater to which I’ll commit.

If it comes as a gift from Santa
Instead of right off a store’s shelf
I can feel better about my clothing
If it’s made by a jolly elf

It’s probably an easier day for them
Than building wooden toys
You don’t have to worry about getting splinters
Making sweaters for girls and boys

Knit it warm and knit it true,
Let kindness guide what needles do,
If love is woven in the seams,
It’s warmer than you’d ever think.
No one bent and nothing lost,
No quiet suffering in the cost,
If Santa’s elves are making it,
That’s the gift I won’t resist.

And if there are elves that are allergic
To furry dogs, hamsters, or cats
They can work in the clothing department
So they won’t sneeze or get a rash

So I ask again for a sweater from Santa
To be under my Christmas tree
I’ve mailed you a list of my measurements
So you can make sure it fits me

I’ve heard there are kids who don’t want clothes for Christmas
But I assure you, Santa, I’m not of that ilk
And if there are silkworms at the North Pole
Could I also request a bathrobe made from silk

So take the time, don’t rush the thread,
Let every loop be something said,
That what we wear can still be kind,
And leave no broken backs behind.
If care is counted, stitch by stitch,
Not traded off for something rich,
If Santa’s elves are making it

That’s the sweater to which I’ll commit.

I’ll tell Santa all this when I see him at the mall on Saturday
And I’ll bring a tape measure along
In case he or his elf want to measure me.
