American Airlines Flight 578 was departing JFK when the pilots received something you never ignore: a TCAS Resolution Advisory.
Their aircraft commanded them to descend to avoid conflicting traffic — so the pilots responded to the warning.
But there was one problem…
Where was the other aircraft?
The crew couldn't identify the traffic around them, and the controller couldn't see an obvious conflict on the radar scope either.
In this episode, retired airline captain and naval aviator Captain Steeeve reacts to the original ATC audio and explains what happens when TCAS issues a Resolution Advisory, why pilots are trained to respond immediately, and how an alert like this can happen even when the conflicting traffic isn't obvious.
