21-year-old flight instructor Emily Shelton was giving a student their very first flight lesson when she smelled burning oil and noticed the aircraft’s oil pressure rapidly dropping.
Realizing they weren’t going to make it back to the airport, Emily declared an emergency and made the decision to put the Piper PA-28 down on Interstate 10 near Pensacola, Florida — navigating traffic, highway signs, and an extremely limited landing area along the way. Both occupants walked away without reported injuries.
