Alexander Ludwig, the young superstar behind roles such as 'Cato' in The Hunger Games, 'Bjorn Ironside' in Vikings, and 'Ace Spade' in Heels, sits down for an interview to discuss his new film, #NationalChampions. National Champions snuck into my top ten films of the year because of how it was a 'small' film with a big message.
#AlexanderLudwig plays Emmett Sunday, a college football player, who along with his friend and teammate, LeMarcus James (Stephan James) ignite a player's strike only three days before the college football national championship game. The two men declare they won't compete until all student athletes are fairly compensated. With billions of dollars at risk and legacies on the line, the stakes couldn't be higher. Now, with only hours until kickoff, their head coach and various power brokers must race against the clock to protect or destroy the prevailing collegiate athletics system.
The film, directed by Ric Roman Waugh has an absolute all-star cast, as it stars J.K. Simmons, Kristin Chenoweth, Timothy Olyphant, Jeffrey Donovan, Tim Blake Nelson, David Koechner and Lil Rey Howard.
During the interview, Alexander and I find some great connections to his proud Canadian heritage, as James, his costar is also Canadian, Ludwig's history with Vikings which was filmed in Canada, and the fact that Heels Season 2 was announced, costarring fellow Canadian Stephen Amell.
NATIONAL CHAMPIONS is in theatres Dec 10th 2021.
