Last night I happened to discover that Alertus Technologies would be testing their 1200W mobile HPSA siren at the University of Cincinnati today at 1:30 PM, so I registered and decided to go.
This particular product (the mobile HPSA- High Powered Speaker Array) is the newest in Alertus' lineup and is currently being demonstrated across the US at various institutions and organizations. UC is considering buying one, as they already have Alertus systems in place inside their campus buildings; hence today's demonstration for various University public safety officials (and us). For the demonstration, a series of voice announcements, a short alert tone, and chimes were tested. If you listen closely, you may be able to hear a series of small "beeping" sounds - this siren is two-way monitored and those are the tones polling the siren.
Based on what the public safety officials had mentioned, they are considering either purchasing a mobile unit or stand-alone units to be placed on poles in order to better enhance their campus' mass notification system outdoors and to be used separately from the county siren, located on the roof of Calhoun Hall at the edge of campus.
I was joined by Christian, August, Jeremy and Dominic at this demonstration. Initially we couldn't find it, and were walking around for about 15 minutes trying to find where it was located at before we spotted it. This siren was one of the most impressive electronic sirens I've ever heard. The voice clarity was crystal clear and all around it was very loud.
I was finally pleased to have heard one of the "Hörmann-style" sirens up close; we refer to them as “Hörmann style” because this original type of speaker array was first designed and introduced by Hörmann GmBH, a siren manufacturer in Germany, in the early 1990’s. Thank you to UC Police and Fire officials and the Alertus sales rep for their kindness and allowing us to witness the demonstration. Enjoy!
