AirAsia X’s record order for 150 Airbus A220 aircraft highlights a shift towards smaller, more efficient jets as Asian airlines expand beyond major hubs.
The US$19 billion order will help AirAsia connect secondary cities while keeping costs and capacity under control.
The A220 will complement its larger A320 and A330 fleets, with deliveries starting in 2028.
Analysts said the deal could also boost Malaysia’s aviation ecosystem, including pilot training, engineering, maintenance and aircraft leasing.
However, the A220’s growth in Asia will depend on aircraft availability and the expansion of support infrastructure.
