Air quality across Malaysia has deteriorated sharply overnight due to intensifying transboundary haze from Indonesia as of 8am today.
Sarawak is the worst-hit region, with 20 stations now recording air pollution levels ranging from unhealthy to hazardous.
The Serian police headquarters station in Sarawak registered a hazardous Air Pollutant Index reading of 364—the highest tier on the index and a steep rise from yesterday.
Three further Sarawak locations—Samarahan, Kuching, and Sri Aman—have entered the very unhealthy bracket, while sixteen other stations across the nation are reporting unhealthy air.
Elevated readings were also noted in Peninsular Malaysia, including Johan Setia in Selangor registering 155 and Batu Muda in Kuala Lumpur recording 153.
The Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre warns that hotspot activity and haze will remain elevated due to ongoing dry spells, with moderate to dense smoke drifting from Borneo and Sumatra.
