President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. leads the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Change of Command Ceremony and Retirement Honors for outgoing AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo S. Brawner Jr., Philippine Army (PA), at the Lapu-Lapu Grandstand in Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City on July 21, 2026.
The ceremony honors General Brawner's invaluable contributions to the AFP over more than 41 years of distinguished military service. During his career, he held key leadership positions, including Commander of Special Forces units, Commander of the 103rd Infantry Brigade in the aftermath of the Marawi Siege, Commandant of Cadets at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA), and Commander of the 4th Infantry Division. He also received numerous local and international awards, including the Philippine Legion of Honor, Distinguished Service Star, Lapu-Lapu Award, Malaysia’s Armed Forces Order for Valor, and the United States Legion of Merit.
A proud member of the PMA ‘Makatao’ Class of 1989, General Brawner is the first AFP Chief of Staff to complete a three-year term under Republic Act No. 11939, known as ‘An Act Further Strengthening Professionalism and Promoting the Continuity of Policies and Modernization Initiatives in the Armed Forces of the Philippines,’ which was signed into law in 2023.
Assuming command as the 61st AFP Chief of Staff is Lieutenant General Antonio Nafarrete, former Philippine Army Commanding General. A member of the PMA ‘Bigkis-Lahi’ Class of 1990, he assumed command of the PA on July 31, 2025. Prior to his appointment as Army Commanding General, he served as Commander of the AFP Western Mindanao Command, where he led joint operations against insurgency and terrorism. He also led the 1st Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Zampelan, and held key posts in the 1101st Infantry Brigade, 11th Infantry Division, and the AFP’s J3 operations staff.
