President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. inspected the damaged Sto. Cristo Dam in Brgy. Sta. Rita, Lubao, Pampanga on September 2, 2026.
During the visit, the President received a briefing on the effects of the dam collapse on 28 August 2026, which destroyed several houses, as well as on the rehabilitation efforts underway by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the National Irrigation Administration (NIA).
The dam accumulated solid waste, logs, and forest and agricultural debris, obstructing the sluice and barrage gates and impeding the efficient flow of water. Excessive rainfall and increased river discharge caused overtopping along the riverbank, leading to the failure of the existing slope protection structure and the formation of a new floodway channel.
The government is implementing measures to clear obstructions, mitigate damage, and improve the dam’s condition and capacity to better manage water flow.
