After creating a fixed feeding station with multiple feeding and resting inserts at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, we were asked if we could design more inserts to create different feeding and behavior opportunities. This brings us to the latest team build, where not only did the team build two awesome bamboo feeders (more about those in a moment), but also created a smaller platform that can be moved inside the house.
The idea is that the various feeding inserts can be swapped between the fixed platform, and the new movable platform, giving the keepers and primates plenty of options on how and where to feed. The new mini platform is made of two parts which can be seen in this video. The frame, made from natural poles, is thin enough to fit through the doors of the animal house, and the top simply slots onto the frame.
The bamboo insert consists of a large central piece of bamboo with a hinged lid and a hole drilled in each 'node'. Then around the outside are 8-10 thin lengths of bamboo that are for climbing, but wobbly under the weight of the mini monkeys. Food, such as mealworms, is put inside the large bamboo where it makes its way through the different nodes and eventually out through the holes.
A huge well done to the team for creating the table and two inserts, and thank you to the keepers for your time and feedback!
