This edition of "Brethren Voices" toured with the Ultimate Whale Watch, from the Lahaina Harbor in Maui, to get a close-up look of the peaceful giants, the Humpback whales. Captain Amy Venema, piloted, our high speed, ocean going raft. It’s low to the magnificent blue Pacific water and perfect for whale watching. Hannah Pittore shares information about the Humpbacks and their 6,000-mile journey.
The Humpbacks have something in common with the Porcupine Caribou herd that we discussed in our very first "Brethren Voices" program,16 years ago. These two species make long migrations. The caribou migrate 17-hundred miles past the homes of the Native Gwich'in, to the coastal plains of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. For the Humpbacks, it's a migration of 6,000 miles.
According to Charlie Swaney, Arctic Village, Alaska, "the caribou make this journey to give birth to their young, where the vegetation helps the calves get stronger, faster." For the Humpbacks, the shallow waters within the islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai provide a safe place for the newborn calves, while consuming about 100 pounds of their mother's milk, daily. For the Humpbacks it is a comeback from a history of near extinction.
Again, we are at a point where we need to give the Creation all the help it needs to prevent our extinction. Basically, it needs to be protected from us humans.
