Since the very first modern streets were built in Bangkok, mornings have begun with vendors selling half-boiled eggs, toast with coconut jam, and, of course, coffee.
Brought by the same Hainanese cooks who opened the Kopitiams of Malaysia and Singapore, Bangkok's oldest cafes tell the story of the first days of coffee in Southeast Asia, years of ethnic migration, and 20th century war and conflict. And hiding in the quiet streets on the outskirts of Chinatown, there are still cafes dating back as far as 1919. This week, we visit Bangkok's earliest surviving breakfast restaurants and tell a story that's still being written today.
