99% of people get resilience all wrong.
They think it's just positive thinking.
They think it means never feeling stressed.
They think it's something you're born with.
It's none of those things.
Real resilience is simple:
It's bouncing back when life knocks you down.
AND bouncing forward, stronger than before.
Like a rubber band that stretches but doesn't snap.
Life will stretch you.
Resilience means you don't break.
At a keynote, I showed change leaders how to build this.
Here are the 6 principles that won over skeptics:
1. Expect tough times
→ Hard things will happen, be ready
→ If you see the punch coming, you can dodge it
→ Don't get surprised
2. Don't follow every thought or feeling
→ Your brain lies to you all the time
→ Thoughts and emotions are signals, not orders.
→ You decide how to act
3. Focus on what you can control
→ Stop wasting energy on things you can't change
→ Let go of everything else
→ This one thing changes your life
4. Resilience is built before crisis hits
→ Practice small hard things every day
→ Try cold showers, yoga, or anything uncomfortable
→ When real trouble hits, you're ready
5. Your 'why' makes the 'how' possible
→ A big reason keeps you going
→ Viktor Frankl survived Nazi camps cuz he had purpose
→ Know why you're doing this
6. Resilience is built together
→ Find people who want the same things
→ Go fast alone, go far together
→ Help each other, we all need it
The cost of ignoring resilience?
50 million years of lost productivity (WHO, 2022).
The cost of building it?
A few minutes of intentional practice every day.
