A fast-growing wildfire near Reno, Nevada, has prompted evacuation orders affecting roughly 90,000 residents as firefighters battle the blaze from the ground and air.
The Hawk Fire has burned more than 23 square miles since it started Saturday and remains 0% contained. Officials believe the fire was human-caused, though the investigation into exactly how it started remains ongoing.
Authorities say homes have been destroyed and multiple people have been reported injured, but conditions have prevented damage-assessment teams from determining the full extent of the destruction.
More than 40,000 residents are in a “Go Now” evacuation zone, meaning they face an imminent threat. Hundreds of evacuees have sought refuge at Red Cross shelters as residents encounter traffic congestion and difficulty finding hotel rooms.
Nevada's governor has declared a state of emergency and activated the Nevada National Guard, while firefighting aircraft and helicopters from neighboring California have joined efforts to battle the fire.
