Questions are growing about the strain on U.S. Navy sailors as operations connected to the conflict with Iran continue in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
About 5,000 service members are aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is now in its ninth month of deployment. The carrier has reportedly conducted flight operations day and night for more than 200 days without a port call, exceeding what a retired Navy vice admiral described as the typical six-to-eight-month operational tempo for an aircraft carrier deployment.
CBS News has also confirmed that a sailor aboard the Abraham Lincoln went overboard earlier this month and was safely recovered.
Meanwhile, the United States and Iran continue disputing who controls passage through the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump says the U.S. Navy controls access as part of its blockade, while Iran maintains that Tehran determines who can use the strategic waterway. A CBS News military analyst describes the strait as “contested,” rather than fully controlled by either side.
