A Beaumont judge delivered a stern lecture about courtroom attire, respect and personal responsibility during a felony theft hearing for Wilton Joseph Sylvester.
Criminal District Court Judge John Stevens questioned what Sylvester wore to court, asking him, “Would you wear that to church?” Stevens told the defendant that someone facing a state jail felony theft charge should dress in a way that shows respect for the importance of the proceedings.
The conversation then turned to Sylvester's criminal history. When Stevens asked how many previous theft convictions he had, Sylvester estimated “15-ish.” The judge said he counted 12 and possibly more. Stevens explained that repeated prior theft convictions can enhance future theft charges and challenged Sylvester's claim that he was working to change his life.
