Groves is in the middle of a major overhaul of its water system, replacing aging water meters citywide as part of a $5.6 million project that will also bring annual rate increases for residents.
Crews have been digging up old meters across the city and installing new ones. Groves City Manager Kevin Carruth said the existing meters are more than 20 years old and have become less reliable.
“The existing water meters, are all over 20 years old. So the mechanical meters, they're getting less and less accurate in the readings. So, it's just time for them to be replaced,” Carruth said.
The project is costing the city about $5.6 million. Carruth said the work is tied to broader system upgrades, including improvements at the wastewater plant, and that the costs will be reflected in utility bills.
Carruth said residents should expect an almost 6% rate increase for wastewater and water bills each year for the next five years. “The underlying reason for the increase is primarily driven by the, that issue to make the system improvements, mainly at the wastewater plant and then the replacement of all the water meters,” he said.
Groves resident Stephanie Powers said she understands the need for infrastructure upgrades, even with higher bills.
