As the defense nears the end of its case in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, testimony is focusing on whether severe postpartum mental illness prevented the Massachusetts mother from being criminally responsible for killing her three children.
Defense psychologist Dr. Paul Eisele testified that, in his opinion, Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis, could not conform her behavior to the law and did not appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions. He also testified about Clancy's account that a male voice ordered her to kill her children and herself.
Prosecutors dispute the defense's interpretation, arguing Clancy deliberately planned the killings and understood what she was doing. The defense has also highlighted two calls Clancy made to a crisis hotline before the deaths.
The case has drawn comparisons to Andrea Yates, the Texas mother who drowned her five children in 2001 and was eventually found not guilty by reason of insanity after her initial conviction was overturned. Although Massachusetts and Texas have different laws, postpartum psychosis has played a central role in both cases.
