The Pentagon is pushing back against reports of difficult conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln as families and lawmakers raise concerns about the extraordinary length of the aircraft carrier's deployment and the well-being of roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard.
The Abraham Lincoln has been deployed for more than 260 days without a port call during the war with Iran—about three months longer than a typical deployment, according to the report. Families say the extended mission and around-the-clock demands of operating in a war zone are raising concerns about service members' mental health.
CBS News has also learned an investigation is underway after a sailor went overboard earlier this month and was quickly rescued.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal is demanding answers from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao, citing reports of supply shortages, water contamination, plumbing problems and deteriorating mental health.
Hegseth disputes reports that conditions aboard the carrier are poor, calling them “completely misrepresented” and saying the military is working to provide the crew with everything it can while bringing service members home as soon as possible.
