People's opinions and actions are often swayed by 'social proofs' or testimonials, often found in 'consensus' studies. A media umbrella group known as "Covering Climate Now" is about the reactivate their "89% Project" which claims that 89% of the public in the world want their governments to take more 'climate action.' The project relies on three different surveys, most of which have a very large polling base, but none of which ask the critical question as to whether respondents are willing to pay trillions of dollars in taxes for immeasurable reductions in warming. In one survey, the people questioned had never heard of climate change before - but after being given a one sentence description, they affirmed that climate change was happening, and they agreed that governments should thus take more climate action. Since climate science is one of the most complex fields of endeavour, it is unlikely that a one sentence description accurately conveyed the issue. Media are allegedly supposed to hold those in power to account, not to act as the ad agency for green cronies. The 89% Project damages the public trust in media and encourages policies that Bjorn Lomborg accurately described in his book title: "False Alarm: How Climate Change Panic Costs Us Trillions, Hurts the Poor, and Fails to Fix the Planet."
