The Municipality of Jasper issued an 'After-Action' report about the 2024 catastrophic wildfire that burned down 1/3 of the town's structures and some 32,000 ha of forest in Jasper National Park. Though intended to provide 'lessons learned' and not blame anyone, one sentence in the report suggested that Alberta interfered in Parks Canada's jurisdiction. Journos and climate activists were quick to jump on that bandwagon, condemning Premier Smith and Alberta; Premier Smith demanded a retraction of the report. Jasper municipality issued a 2-page statement days later outlining the very significant contributions that Alberta had made. But another report issued January 18, 2024 was Jasper's Municipal Climate Change Risk Assessment. Funded by the Alberta government for $79,500 it was meant to assess future risks. Shockingly, in this report Parks Canada was quite blase about the wildfire risk, despite extreme fears expressed by Jasper residents, claiming that the wildfire risk was less than the public perceived. This video explainer examines some aspects of these reports, as well as looking at how government funded 'nudge' units and psychological tactics are being used by climate activists to tie extreme weather events and wildfires to drive 'climate action' - using your tax dollars for meaningless green crony projects when that money could be much better applied to real, practical present time issues - like better forestry management and more wildfire equipment, budgets, and human resources.
