The only double chimney Jubilee class in the form of 45596 Bahamas was tasked with the arduous climb of Sapperton Bank on the Cotswold Venturer. The highlight is always the fierce curved climb through the Golden Valley which now resembles a jungle and shots are limited at best. Sapperton would be surmounted both ways by Bahamas with the the Jubilee making light work of the East side of Sapperton on the outbound leg where Bahamas is seen roaring along just outside of Kemble and then at Coates which is at the bottom of the bank. We always try to get ahead of the train after the Gloucester water stop and we rarely make it due to the nature of the first two locations and the country roads and the Saturday traffic. This time we just made it in the nick of the time, though a handheld shot on a busy road bridge would have to do.
For the return leg we would head to the proper side of Sapperton where three angles would capture the sure footed climb of a Jubilee in full voice as the train snaked its way into the tunnel in fine style. The first two scenes capture Bahamas at Frampton Mansell and then from high above the tunnel looking down over the Golden Valley as the sound of steam began to raise before emerging into the open in full glory. Lovely stuff !
As I briefly mentioned above Sapperton Bank is one of the most difficult places to film due to nature doing its thing and the recent installation of crossing sirens and signage which has been erected along the two main crossings. Only three angles remain and its expected the shot high up above the tunnel will be fenced off in due course, so it was paramount that we was in attendance for this one. Oh, there's also a nice bonus shot at the end featuring 6233 Duchess Of Sutherland on the Geordie Duchess from Newcastle to Birmingham. At 23.20pm on Saturday night 6233 charges away from Tamworth and erupts through Wilnecote station on the final stages of its mammoth return leg. Glad I made the effort in the end as I was in two minds about going after our long day at Sapperton !
