How many of your beds are actually in production right now? Not how many you have — how many are earning revenue today. For most small farms, the honest answer is: not all of them.
The math: 50 beds × 3 rotations × $400/harvest = $60,000. Bump that to 4 rotations on the same 50 beds: $80,000. That's $20,000 more from one extra turn per bed. Same land. No expansion.
This video covers four ways to close the gap: eliminate dead time between crops (a bed sitting empty for 10 days between harvests adds up to a full lost rotation over a season), use your nursery as a parallel processing tool (transplanting lets the next crop grow in the tray while the current crop finishes in the bed — Jody Robuck gained a full month this way with paper-potted onions), batch harvest instead of thin harvest (crop out the whole bed in one pass, replant next day — compresses turnaround from 10–14 days to 1–2), and extend your season with low tunnels (60 extra days = one more rotation at $400/bed).
